Wondering how to safely store the breast milk? Breast milk, commonly known as liquid gold, should be stored properly and with the utmost care to maintain adequate freshness, nutritional value and anti-infective properties. Liquids tend to grow as they congeal. Do not fully fill the storage container, but leave space, at least one inch, to allow for expansion. Use a cooler with ice packages or dry ice packages if you are travelling to keep the pumped milk fresh. Microwave either. Microwave doesn’t even induce fire, and can scald the infant. It also induces the degeneration of normal and well established enzymes.
Do not heat the container or bag directly onto the stove. Do not allow its temperature to reach high or boiling point temperatures. Do thaw frozen milk in a bowl of hot water by placing the package or bottle. The milk can isolate while it is in the refrigerator. Do not shake nor mix the cream and the finer mixture to re-emulsify. Be sure to check the freshness before feeding it to your baby after it has been thawed. This should be done particularly if it has been stored for some time.
Do not store the breast milk for more than 6 hours at room temperature. Do not put it in the fridge for more than eight days. Do not store it inside the freezer door rack. This causes the milk to become exposed to wide temperature ranges due to the freezer door opening and closing. Do store up to 6 months of milk in the rear of the fridge.
The milk may be bad after these recommended time periods, and should not be given to the kid but immediately discarded. When expressed milk is kept in congeler containers, use double bags to avoid spilling or leakage. Do not store ordinary bags. For store expressed milk, make sure that the bags you are using are specified.
Do not allow the water to go over the top of the container when warming / thawing refrigerated or frozen milk. Water can leak into the milk supply and contaminate it. If the water used during heating is murky, there has been a spill and the milk has to be discarded. Always ensure sterileity of the containers used to store expressed milk.
